Terrain launched roughly two years ago. In that time, we’ve found that being a great partner sometimes means doing things that venture firms of our scale and age don’t often do.
For us, this has taken shape as a sizable body of work alongside our investing work.
We’ve created programs that offer support in idea selection, no-strings-attached. We’ve produced events that bring founders and makers together in ways that don’t follow the standard conference format. We built internal and external tools for founders. We’ve worked with our portfolio companies to produce commercials, video interviews, newspapers, and launch films, with more to come.
None of this was planned as a portfolio service or a marketing strategy. It came from taking the founder partnership seriously enough to act on it. Like the founders we back, we are building Terrain as a company: one where our customer is the founder and our product is a partnership itself. The output has been sourcing, hires, partnerships, and new opportunities we couldn’t have manufactured otherwise.
We’re not satisfied with where this stands today. Our list of what we want to do next is more ambitious and scaled than what we’ve done. There are stories that haven’t been told. Ideas that need to see the light of day. And each new initiative requires more coordination and expertise than the last.
We’re now hiring someone to take ownership of this work.
Not to run events. Not to manage content calendars. But to make ideas happen. The kind of person a film production company or creative studio would call a Producer — someone who holds together complex, high-quality projects, makes good decisions under pressure, and cares about the quality of every output. This is a specific role that we believe many firms like ours will one day employ.
This person probably hasn’t worked at a venture firm, or maybe even in technology. They’ve done meaningful work somewhere, an agency, a brand, a cultural institution, and done it with enough care that the details were never an afterthought.
They see what needs to happen, and they do it. They care what things look like. They push back when something isn’t right.
If this sounds like you, we’d love to meet. Email hiring@terrain.com
